You sign up for GiveADog and specify your gift recipient. Pets Alive Animal Sanctuary, a charitable organization that has been saving animals for more than thirty years, and GiveADog will send your gift recipient a card (it's pictured below):




Then the person goes to the GiveADog website and picks their dog. They get pictures and detailed descriptions for each dog, and they pick the one they want to save and follow. Here is an actual description of one of the dogs:

Description:
Noel hails from a litter that arrived at a rural, rough and tumble, municipal shelter located in an archived Superfund landfill north of Little Rock, Arkansas. The mortality rate is high at this shelter for the young and the infirm because they are often unable to adapt to the primitive environment where only the fittest often survive. Add in the fact that the shelter has very few adoptions each year and is therefore considered a high kill shelter and pups are often thrust in to a double jeopardy situation. At the time these pups arrived, city workers had been bush hogging the high grass that covered the landscape surrounding the shelter's communal,gravel lined fenced pens, forcing myriad Western rattle snakes out of hiding and in to the clear grounds surrounding the pups' chain link pen! Thankfully, this group escaped incident with the rattlers found very temporary refuge off-site while being prepped to travel to rescue. The pups are safe now.

Once they pick their dog they get a Certificate of Appreciation "signed" by both Pets Alive and the dog.





They now log into their Control Center, where they can follow their dog on the journey to a forever home. Data is updated in real time. Each time data is updated an email goes out to the person. Other emails about dogs, animal rescue and other related topics also go out on a regular basis. Your recipient can interact with the people caring for their dog, and they can view pictures and videos of their dog that are updated on a regular basis. Here's a screenshot of the control panel:
